“Experienced educators who are content experts - but who consider themselves technology novices - have an important contribution to make in ‘Internet Tools for Academic Excellence,’” says Dr. Dean E. Shankle, Jr., CEO of Aretao, a Milford, NH professional development provider. “They need a a place to learn that can address their concerns and allow them to have a positive experience in the online world.”
“Internet Tools for Academic Excellence” is a special online initiative to bring experienced educators who may have missed the technology wave together with educators who have tech experience who will enjoy the chance to tap the wealth of knowledge of experienced educators. Aretao has collaborated with the University of San Diego to offer graduate credits to participants. The course will begin with a research-based conversation among teachers on technology use and academic rigor, and will then help teachers use technological tools to create materials for their content areas.
“Teachers sometimes wrestle with finding the balance between teaching applied skills and teaching an in-depth liberal arts curriculum, especially when preparing high school students for university. Besides teaching applied skills in the course, we also will discuss how to achieve that balance,” said Shankle.
Aretao, also in collaboration with the University of San Diego, is now enrolling participants for “Eastern Europe and the Millennium Development Goals.” The course will use the eight United Nations Millennium Development Goals as a framework to review the present situation in Eastern Europe. Using readings from the United Nations, the World Bank, and USAID, among others, participants will have the opportunity to put the changes occurring in Eastern Europe into a framework relevant to general themes in the field of social studies.
Dr. Shankle spent time in Ukraine during 2000 – 2005 helping to set up a public administration program at Uzhhorod State University. During the 2006-2007 academic year, he is serving as a Fulbright Scholar lecturing at the Academy of Public Administration of the Office of the President of Moldova. His team at Aretao has expertise in government, education, community economic development and knowledge management. They have executed large projects for international professional and educational organizations. To learn more, visit www.aretao.com.
