Today, the Institute of Education Sciences (IES), an independent arm of the United States Department of Education, released its first-year evaluation of the Washington, D.C. Opportunity Scholarship Program (OSP). The report shows academic progress in some subgroups and very high parent satisfaction with the program.
Gov. Sonny Perdue signed the Georgia Special Needs Scholarship into law today, opening the door to a better education for thousands of Georgia students with disabilities. The law, previously passed by the state Senate and General Assembly, creates a scholarship program that will allow children with special needs to attend the public or private school that best meets their educational needs.
A broad coalition of policymakers and community advocates have urged Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings to take action against school districts that refuse to comply with the student transfer provisions outlined in the No Child Left Behind Act. Leaders of 25 state and national policy organizations sent their request through a letter to Spellings on Friday.
