Cherry Lane Music Publishing Inc., which publishes Music Alive! a not-for profit music magazine and listening program for students, has announced the creation of an innovative workshop designed to educate students about the music industry and to demonstrate practical application of an academic curriculum in the music business. On March 21st the workshop was presented to seventh graders at Holtville's Sagamore Middle School in Suffolk County Richard Stumpf, SVP of Creative Services & Marketing at Cherry Lane Music and Caroline Horn, Editorial Director of Music Alive! were joined at the school by songwriters Nini Camps and Amadeus, who are signed to the Cherry Lane roster.
Stumpf created the workshop in hopes of inspiring students to stay in school. "When I was their age, it would have been helpful to understand how the subjects I was learning could be applied to fun careers," notes Stumpf. While addressing the students, Stumpf, Camps and Amadeus stressed the importance of academics and provided examples of how their own studies influenced and guided their careers. For example, the same grammar and poetry taught in English class helps to develop songwriting skills. Additionally, students learned how subjects such as Mathematics emerge from textbooks into real life when computing royalties due to an artist or songwriter. These subjects can be applied to a range of jobs within the music industry, from the creative side to business focused positions, such as royalties.
Seventh graders at Sagamore Middle School also experienced the performance aspect of the music industry when Camps and Amadeus jointly performed in both English and Spanish. The students were asked to submit a review of the collaboration just as a professional music critic would do. The best review will be chosen by Horn and the winner will be nationally recognized in a future edition of Music Alive!
Since its inception in 1960, Cherry Lane has been a strong advocate of music education. Milt Okun, the founder of Cherry Lane, is known for having developed the careers of legendary artists such as John Denver, Placido Domingo, Peter, Paul & Mary and Harry Belafonte. Before Okun made his mark in music history, he was a New York City music teacher.
Although he loved the direct connection with his students, Okun found the music teaching resources available to be lackluster. After establishing Cherry Lane, Okun launched Music Alive! to enhance students' music experience in the classroom and give back to the music community. Today, Music Alive! is thriving as it reaches more than 400,000 students across the country and uses the power of music to inspire teenagers to be passionate learners.
"Cherry Lane has always recognized the importance of music education in schools and we are excited for another avenue to reach students. It is imperative that students are exposed to the ways in which their education can provide a foundation for their career," said Stumpf regarding the program. As excited students buzzed about the workshop, seventh grade Sagamore teacher Heather Stumpf remarked, "The students were definitely inspired, and at a time when they are so impressionable, it will really make a difference in their lives." As Cherry Lane's first workshop was a success with Sagamore students, Cherry Lane plans on widening this message by bringing the program to other schools across the nation.
