Few questions seem to divide us more these days than what it means to be an American. One of the reasons this seemingly innocent question stirs such passion is because there’s really no one right answer. Despite varying definitions of citizenship, most Americans nevertheless would agree that the principles outlined in America’s founding documents—the Declaration of Independence, Constitution and Bill of Rights—are a good place to start and are key to maintaining our national identity.

Kansas, Texas & Virginia Students Chosen to Compete for Cash Prizes During First Year
Arlington, VA High-school students and teachers in Kansas,Texas andVirginia have the chance to win significant cash prizes by participating in a new essay contest focused on exploring the rights and responsibilities of citizenship, the non-profit Bill of Rights Institute announced today. The “Being an American” essay contest, supported by a grant from the John Templeton Foundation, will start in these three states and expand nationally until all 50 states participate during the 2009-2010 school year.
